We will kick off tomorrow’s match as part of the 26th PKO BP Ekstraklasa round at 7pm, with our rival team Jagiellonia Białystok.
Jagiellonia Białystok is the only representative of the Podlasie region at the highest level of the league in Poland. The club was founded on 30 May 1920 by soldiers from the reserve battalion of the 42nd infantry regiment. The club was then called WKS 42nd Infantry Regiment Białystok (Military Sports Club). on 27 January 1932 the club was transformed into the civilian-military Jagiellonia Białostocki Sport Club. It was formed from the merger of the WKS 42nd Infantry Regiment and the Sports Club of the Union of Rural Youth. The name Jagiellonia was associated with the history of the city, which was intertwined with the Jagiellonian family. After the war, the first attempt to reactivate Jagiellonia took place in 1945, but it was a rather unsuccessful attempt.
Jaga was reactivated for good in 1957, when two clubs, Budowlane Białystok and Sparta Białystok, were merged. The club was then restored to its former traditions, the pre-war coat of arms and the yellow and red and white colours.
Jagiellonia managed to climb to the highest level of the competition for the first time under the leadership of future manager Janusz Wójcik in the 1986/86 season. The first round in their debut season inEkstraklasa (then 1 Liga), was not the best. Indeed, the Bialystok side finished it in 14th position, Janusz Wójcik was sacked and his assistant, Mirosław Mojsiuszko, took over the reins. In the second round, Jaga won all their home matches and finished the season in 8th position. The following season, Jagiellonia also managed to stay at the highest competition level in Poland, also finishing the season in 8th place. They also made the final of the Polish Cup, but had to accept the superiority of Legia Warsaw. In the 1989/90 season, the Bialystok side were relegated from the Ekstraklasa for the first time, but returned to it after just two years, an event Podlasie fans certainly do not remember well, as the team were relegated to a lower league with a bang straight after promotion. The team from Podlasie was promoted to the Ekstraklasa for good in the 2006/2007 season under Ryszard Tarasiewicz. Since then, until now, Jagiellonia has been playing regularly at the highest level. During that time it has also added to winning the Cup and Super Cup of Poland under Michał Probierz. Currently, Jagiellonia Białystok is a club that has not enjoyed much success in recent years. It has finished the last three seasons in 8th, 9th and 12th position respectively. Jaga can boast a very effective offensive duo this season. We are, of course, talking about Marc Gualu and Jesus Imaz. The Spanish footballers are absolutely key players in the jigsaw of current coach Maciej Stolarczyk.
Both have 10 goals each in the current competition and lead the table of the league’s top scorers along with Michael Ishak of Lech Poznan. Marc Gual came to Jagiellonia in the spring round of last season on loan from Ukrainian club, SK Dnipro. At the moment, he has played 31 games for the team from Białystok, in which he scored 13 times, adding 3 assists. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of talk about Legia Warsaw’s interest in his services. Jesus Imaz has already become a kind of Jagiellonia icon. He joined the team 4 years ago from Wisła Kraków, where he already showed his high skills. In Jagiellonia he has shown for good what a great star he is, on the scale of our league. In total, he played 123 matches for the team from Podlasie, scored 51 goals and recorded 16 assists. This is a duo of players to look out for in particular during our upcoming match.
