About the opponent – Korona Kielce Korona

Krona Kielce is a club that was formed on 10 July 1973 as a result of the merger of two other Kielce clubs – Iskra and SHL Kielce. The name “Krona” was chosen as a result of a competition. The club’s coat of arms featured a crown also found in the city’s coat of arms.

The first president of the newly-established club was Ryszard Bajer, while the coach was Zbigniew Pawlak. A month after the club was founded, Korona entered the Kielce District League. The first ever match was on 5 August 1973. Koronians played against Sparta Kazimierza Wielka, the match ended with the score 3:0 for Korona. In 1975 Korona were promoted to the ll Liga. However, their first season on the second league pitches ended with immediate relegation after finishing 15th in the table. The next promotion to the second division was achieved 5 years later under head coach Antoni Hermanowicz. Since then, the Crown players were not relegated from the league for the next five seasons. However, despite many efforts involving various changes of coaches or players, they failed to get promoted higher to the highest competition level in Poland, and the team was eventually relegated back to the lll Liga.

Over the following seasons, the team balanced between the ll and lll Liga to finally be promoted to the l Liga (then Ekstraklasa) level for the first time in the 2004/05 season. It is also important to note that in 2002 a new sponsor, the Kielce-based Kolporter S.A, came into the club and significantly helped the team to achieve their long-awaited promotion. In their debut season at League level, Korona finished a very high 5th place. One of the revelations of that season was the team’s striker from Kielce, Grzegorz Piechna, who scored 21 goals and became the top scorer of the competition. The following season for Korona was equally successful, as the team, first led by the coach who had done promotion with the club, i.e. Ryszard Wieczorek, and then after the change of coach to Arkadiusz Kaliszan, took 7th place at the end and reached the final of the Polish Cup, in which, however, they succumbed to Dyskobola Grodzisk Wielkopolski.

In the 2007/2008 season Korony Kielce was relegated one competition level lower. After the relegation, the team was led for some time by the well-known coach Włodzimierz Gąsior, well known in Mielec, but in May 2009 he was replaced by Marek Motyka, who eventually led Korona back to the Ekstraklasa. Since then, the team from the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship has not been relegated from the league for the next 11 seasons. The biggest successes in those years were that the Kielce club finished 5th twice. The first time, in the 2011/12 season, this was achieved with the team by the former coach of Steel Mielec, Leszek Ojrzyński. While the second time, in the 2016/17 season, it was achieved by coach Maciej Bartoszek. Another significant event involving coach Bartoszek is Korona’s relegation in the 2019/20 season.

There is also another important event associated with coach Ojrzynski, and that is Korona’s return to the Ekstraklasa in the 2021/22 season. As of the current season, therefore, Korona Kielce can again be seen at the highest competition level in Poland. At the moment, Korona led by Kamil Kuzere records a balance of 6:4:4 in the spring round. This has taken them out of the relegation zone. They currently occupy 14th position in the table.
