About the opponent – Wisła Płock

Wisła Płock was founded in 1947 under the name Electricity Sports Club, in subsequent years it was also known as Zrzeszenie Sportowe Ogniwo and Zrzeszenie Sportowe Sparta. However, in 1955 a new name was established – Klub Sportowy Wisła Płock. In subsequent years, the name changed a few more times to: Petrochemie Płock or Orlen Płock, finally since 2002 so far the name Wisła Płock has been functioning.

Until the early 1960s, Wisła played exclusively in district games. The first promotion was won in the 1962/63 season and since then, until 1981, the team balanced between the district league and the third level of the competition. Everything changed, however, with their promotion in the 1880/81 season to the second league level, from which they did not fall for the next decade. Exactly on 11 June 1994, the Oilers celebrated their historic promotion to the league (then the Ekstraklasa) after a victory over Szombierki Bytom (3:0), but failed to defend it and, after their first historic season at Poland’s highest competition level, had to settle for the second league again the following season. For a longer period, or more precisely for 2 seasons in the liga, Wisła existed in 1999-2001, after which the team was relegated, and immediately promoted again for the next 5 years. It was also during this time that the team achieved its greatest success, namely winning the Polish Cup in the 2005/06 season, beating Zagłębie Lubin in the final. The following year the Polish Super Cup was also won.

The following years were tough, Wisła was relegated from the league, and on top of that the over forty year old owner PKN Orlen gave away 100% of the shares to the city, becoming only the strategic sponsor for the next three years. The hard years for Wisła began then, the team from a Polish Cup winner, for a while became a second-league player (already after the reform, ll liga became the third level of the competition). Eventually, all those hard years were crowned with promotion in the 2015/16 season under coach Marcin Kaczmarek to the Ekstraklasa level, from which they have not been relegated so far. Wisła’s performances in Europe are also worth mentioning. They played there three times consecutively in the 2003/04, 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons, but never once did they cause a major surprise, each time dropping out already in the first match. In the UEFA Cup, they faced Lithuania’s FK Ventspils, Switzerland’s Grasshopers and Ukraine’s Chornomoreć Odessa.

Currently, Wisła is the team that is led by coach Pavol Stano. Their first round was quite good, and they finished it with a balance of 8-4-5. The second part of the season, however, is definitely not going their way, with a balance of 2-2-9 at the moment. However, one should not underestimate a team in which such recognised league players as Rafał Wolski, Mateusz Szwoch, Łukasz Sekulski and Bartosz Śpiączka play.
