From the club chronicle of Stal – there was a match with Cracovia (part 73)

The start of the 1956 second league campaign under head coach Antoni Brzeżańczyk (he and his charges still played actively in the league three times that season) was extremely difficult for our team. After 6 series of games, as an absolute newcomer to the central level, we had just 3 points (13th and penultimate place in the 2nd league table; we drew 0-0 with Polonia in Bytom on 8.04.1956 and won 1-0 with Naprzod Lipiny in Mielec on 15.04.1956).

The trip to the vice-leader, Kraków, promised to be full of apprehension, especially as it was the first ever official match between the two clubs. Stal played extremely ambitiously from the first minutes of Sunday’s match. It presented itself effectively especially in defence, led by Książek. Our goalkeeper Ryszard Mysiak also showed a good side in his home town. In midfield, Waleska led the way, while the attack was poorly composed on that day, as moving Baran to the right wing position was of little use, as the Procak-Czylok pairing was broken up and performed poorly. The locals took the upper hand at first, culminating in Glimas’ crossbar shot from the penalty area. Our team had a good situation as early as the 8th minute, but Procak, in a one-on-one with Michno, sent the ball high over the crossbar from close range. Cracovia continued to press, but shots by Opoka, Kasprzyk and Reichel missed the target.

In the second half, as Katowice Sport wrote in their post-match report, nervous Cracovia fans began to cheer our team on with shouts of bravo Mielec, as the hosts continued to disappoint. They created just one threatening action, but Opoka failed again. The Mielec players had two of these opportunities. The first in the 51st minute by Tobollik and then in the 60th minute by Czylok. Five minutes later, our goalkeeper had to prove himself, as he sacrificially threw himself under the legs of the speeding Radon. A goalless draw was the deserved result of the day and it was our eleven who were closer to victory on a difficult ground.
