From the Stal club chronicle – there was a match against Korona Kielce (part 72)

Stal, in their second consecutive season in the 2nd division, with ambitious young coach Włodzimierz Gąsior, wanted to do everything to return to the Premier League in the 1984/85 season. After nine rounds of the autumn round and a 3-0 victory in Mielec in the previous meeting with Premier League relegated Cracovia, the blue-and-whites were in third place (12 points) with a loss of just one point to the leader, which was Nowa Hutnik.

The 2 p.m. white-blue duel in Kielce, played on Saturday, against the local Korona, who had a three-point loss to our team, was, especially until the break, quite balanced. However, it was the hosts who created more opportunities to score in this part of the game, but Molenda, Tokarczyk and Misiowiec’s shots were off target. The Mielczanie responded in this part of the game with an action in the 41st minute performed by striker Andrzej Banasik, who in a one-on-one situation with local goalkeeper Goska hit him directly.

The second half was similar to the previous one. Again, the Kielce players were in the lead, but they had to wait until the 73rd minute for an effective finish to their attacks, when Andrzej Molenda surprised Mielec goalkeeper Witold Pazdan for the first time that day. The Steelers rallied to make up for the loss. They had a great opportunity to do so in the 88th minute, but the head strike of midfielder Jan Urbanek (the best sniper of Stal with 11 goals in the whole competition) hit the crossbar. Our team’s last-minute goal was scored by … our alumnus Mirosław Misiowiec (1st match in the Premier League in a blue-and-white jersey – 18 June 1975, ROW Rybnik – Stal Mielec 3-1). He took advantage of a clash between Mielec defenders Zuba and Bedryja. The defeat did not affect the final outcome of next spring’s game in this league, as our eleven fulfilled their goal one hundred per cent, winning promotion to the elite for the third time in our club’s history, while our rival eventually took 8th place.
