Our rival: Miedź Legnica

Miedź Legnica is a club founded in 1971. At that time it was a newly established club which continued the tradition of the multi-sectional MZKS Legnica. The first president at the time was Mr Witold Grabowski. The name adopted at the time was KS Miedź Legnica and served the club until 1996, followed by ASPN Miedź Legnica, which served until 2011. From that year until now, the full name is MKS Miedź Legnica SA.

Despite its still young age, Miedzianka can credit its account with winning the Polish Cup in 1992. They defeated then, at the stadium of Legia Warsaw, the team of Górnik Zabrze after a penalty shootout and, in return, appeared in the 1/16 of the Cup Winners’ Cup the following year. They then faced AS Monaco, who were then led by long-time Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger. The result in the two-match series was 0:1 for the team from the principality. It is noteworthy that Copper did the deed as a second division side. This success was not followed by others, the club’s problems piled up and eventually in 2010. ASPN Miedź Legnica stood on the brink of bankruptcy. After Mr Andrzej Dadełła joined the club in 2011, the situation changed dramatically. A fully professional approach and good organisation eventually resulted in promotion to the Ekstraklasa in the 2017/18 season. This stay, however, was not a long one and not much good came out of it, apart from the star of our former footballer Pettri Forsell, which was then lit up.

Copper said goodbye to the top tier of the competition after just one year and from the following season the premise had to change from wanting to stay in the Ekstraklasa, to a quick return there. Three years were enough and from this season we can again watch Miedzianka at the highest level. Currently, Miedź is the last team in the league table, rather even the greatest optimists struggle to believe in keeping the team at the highest level of the competition.

Miedź has an interesting squad, which in the last meeting with Legia proved that it can play a good solid match. The match against the team from Warsaw ended with a score of 2:2 after emotions until the very end. Definitely coach Grzegorz Mokry will want to build on this optimism of the team before the last games of the season. Certainly, one must not underestimate a team that features, for example, Andrzej Niewulis or Luciano Narsingh. On Monday, we will face a club that, due to its young age, is still building its history, but certainly the first successes cannot be taken away from them, it promises to be a very interesting duel in the contract of maintenance!
