50 years ago Stal Mielec won the first Polish Championship

24 June 1973 will forever go down in the history of our club. On that day, Stal won the Polish Championship for the first time in its history.

On Sunday, 24 June, the team from Mielec played their last match of the 1972/1973 season, with Stal Mielec taking on Zagłębie Wałbrzych at their own stadium. The first goal for our team was scored by Grzegorz Lato, with Jan Domarski scoring the second. The meeting ended with a 2-0 victory and Mielec became the capital of Polish football.

In the 1972/1973 season, 18 players represented the colours of Stali. 7 players appeared in all 26 matches, and they were: Zygmunt Kukla, Krzysztof Rześny, Marian Kosiński, Eryk Hansel, Włodzimierz Gąsior, Adam Popowicz and Witold Karaś. Grzegorz Lato played 24 matches, Henryk Kasperczak – 22 matches, Artur Janus – 20. Ryszard Sekulski and Jan Domarski appeared in 16 matches, Stanisław Stój in 14, Jan Wiącek in 6, Tadeusz Krysiński in 4 matches, and Ryszard Rachwał in 3 matches. Stanisław Majcher and Stanisław Stępień also played in the colours of Stali, appearing in one game. In the autumn round, the team was led by coach Andrzej Gajewski, and from 1 January 1973, Hungarian coach Károly Kontha.

The title of top goalscorer in the 1973/1972 season went to Stali player Grzegorz Lato, who scored 13 goals.

We started celebrating the 50th anniversary of our club winning the Polish Championship already in December 2022. It was then that a series of meetings in the FKS Stali Mielec shop with players of our club from the 1972/1973 season was launched. The meetings with the legends enjoyed great interest, not only among those who remember winning the Polish Championship, but also among the youngest. The invitation to the event was accepted by all living players from the championship season: Grzegorz Lato, Włodzimierz Gąsior, Witold Karaś, Jan Domarski, Adam Popowicz, Krzysztof Rześny, Stanisław Stój and Henryk Kasperczak, who came from France to meet the white-blue fans, especially at the invitation of Jacek Klimek – President of the Management Board of FKS Stal Mielec S.A.

The first footballer that we had the pleasure to host was the goal scoring king of the 1972/1973 season- Mr Grzegorz Lato. During the meeting, the legendary footballer presented a replica of the jersey from the championship season, which went on sale in our FKS Stal Mielec shop.
With the youngest white and blue fans in mind, the jersey was also produced in children’s sizes.

Legends of our club also received invitations to PKO BP Ekstraklasa matches and gave interviews to the Canal Plus Sport station, talking about the historic success of our club.

In addition to a replica of the championship jersey from the 1972/1973 season, posters and postcards with images of our legendary players and retro-style calendars were also on sale. They were the perfect place to get an autograph from the players who won the Polish Championship.

What was the career of our legends like? How do they recall winning the Polish Championship. These and many other questions were answered by the players from the 1972/1973 season in the programme of the “Steel Memories” series. In the programmes we had the pleasure of hosting all the legends of our club.

The culmination of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our club winning the Polish Championship was a special edition of Solski Magazine 1. The magazine, which was published before Easter and was entirely dedicated to the historic success of our team. Bearing in mind the white and blue supporters living outside our city, the magazine was also published in an online version, which can be found at the following link: https://tiny.pl/w6jwj

We would like to thank all the players once again and congratulate them on winning the Polish Championship. Your success has been permanently written in the pages of history. You are the LEGENDS of this club and an inspiration for generations to come.

We would also like to thank the fans who participated in such large numbers in all forms of celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Championship.
