The duel played on Saturday afternoon was dictated by our eleven. From the very first minutes, the Steelmen were pushing at the visitors’ goal, closing in on their rivals like in a hockey castle, but their actions lacked the necessary acceleration. Mirosław Wnuk had two good opportunities, but he missed both in the 9th and 30th minutes. In the last quarter of the first half, our team accelerated the game considerably. Urbanek had a good situation in the 36th minute, but the ball after his header missed the post. The next action (38th minute), which decided the fate of the match, involved both players mentioned above. The rushing Wnuk sent a strong and precise pass straight to the feet of Jan Urbanek, who beat Surlit. The opponent dug in in front of the penalty area in the first part of the game, usually limiting themselves to kicking the ball as far as possible.
The second 45 minutes our players started with even more commitment and fans of the Mielec team thought they were able to increase the result. The fierce onslaught lasted only until the 70th minute, during which time we fired a few shots (Wnuk, Barnak and Urbanek) at the visitors’ goal. After that, our enthusiasm definitely waned and Korona came to the fore. First, in the 72nd minute, after a fatal mistake by Duchnowski, the recently introduced Brzeszczynski found himself in a one-on-one situation with our goalkeeper. Then his feat was copied three minutes later by Wyciślik. Both, however, lost to our alumnus Witold Pazdan, who twice showed off his goalkeeping mastery. Still five minutes before the end, our defender Porębny knocked the ball out of the goal line. In the ensuing slender win, the blue and white team took a set of points and did not surrender the leader’s seat until the end of the season. The gates of the premier league for Mielec were opened for the third time in history ..
