Rival history – Piast Gliwice

Rival history – Piast Gliwice

The beginning of the club from Gliwice dates back to 18 June 1945. It was then that the Piast Gliwice Sports Club was established. In the following years, the club adopted other names, such as Metal or Stal Gliwice. In 1955, the club returned to its original name. In 1956, Piast were promoted to the second tier of the Polish football league, where they played for almost 30 years, with a short break for appearances in the third tier. During this time they also managed to advance twice to the final of the Polish Cup. However, twice they lost, consecutively in 1978 to Zagłębie Sosnowiec and in 1983 to Lechia Gdańsk. After Piast were hit by financial problems in the early 1990s, the situation at the club was tough. All this ended with the club’s withdrawal from the competition in 1993. A merger with Bojkow Gliwice then took place, which resulted in the existence of Piast Bojkow for several years. From 1997, Piast dissolved cooperation
with its previous partner and began an arduous rebuilding process, starting the season on B Class pitches. In 2008, after finishing third in the league, Piast were promoted to the Ekstraklasa level for the first time. After two years at the highest competition level in our country, the club from Upper Silesia said goodbye to the competition and was relegated for another two years, after which they managed to get promoted again. Since then, the club has established itself and has been playing in the Ekstraklasa continuously since 2012. Throughout the history of the club from Gliwice, their biggest success was unquestionably winning the Polish Championship in the 2018/19 season, when, under coach Waldemar Fornalik, the club reached for the coveted trophy
The biggest stars of that team were, of course, Joel Valencia, Jorge Felix or Patryk Dziczek. Two of the three players just mentioned are now playingagain
in Gliwice. It is also worth mentioning that our current player, Mateusz Mak, contributed to all this. The club can also boast of having represented our country four times on the international stage. A total of
11 matches, 2 of which were Champions League qualifying matches, while the remaining 9 were Europa League qualifying matches. Piast played matches against teams such as: FC Copenhagen, Qarabag or IFK Goteborg. At present, Piast is a team led by Aleksandar Vuković, which is 15th in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table. By all fans, this result is perceived as a huge disappointment. Definitely more is expected from a team with such players as – Damian Kądzior, Jakub Czerwiński or Kamil Wilczek, and of course Grzegorz Tomasiewicz, well known to Mielec fans. Piast have played 5 matches this year, 2 of them won, 1 tied and 2 lost. Friday’s match will be very important for both us and the team from Upper Silesia.
