However, after five years there was a first relegation, but after another four years the players under coach Władysław Żmuda were promoted to the highest level of the competition. The 1975/76 season was an important one in Śląsk’s history, with the final of that Polish Cup forever linked in the annals of history between the team from Wrocław and our own Stalą Mielec. It was then that the players from Stal and Slask faced off against each other; unfortunately for us, the players from Wrocław proved better. It was the first historic success for the Warriors. A year later, WKS’s players had another great reason to celebrate, as the champion of Poland in the 1976/77 season was Śląsk Wrocław. The following years were no longer so rich in trophies, but still very successful due to the places Śląsk occupied in the league table. This included two vice-championships and two fourth places. Another big success came in the 1986/87 season, it was then that the Wrocław players managed to reach the Polish Cup for the second time, beating GKS Katowice in the final match. The following years were not as successful and, like many other clubs, Slask were hit by a crisis, after 20 years of playing at the highest level of the competition, Slask were relegated from the league. Many of the following years were very much sinusoidal, promotion-relegation-promotion-relegation. There was even a relegation to the third tier of play in the country. Slask returned to the top tier in the 2007/08 season under Ryszard Tarasiewicz. The following season was a successful one, ending with a high sixth place, and winning the Ekstraklasa Cup.
After a few more years, namely in 2011/12 under the leadership of a well-known coach – Orest Lenczyk – the club from the Lower Silesia region reached for the second Polish Champion title in its history. In the following season, the Super Cup of Poland was also reached, and at the moment it is the last trophy won by the players of Śląsk Wrocław. The same trophy, which is also worth mentioning, was also won by the players of Wojskowa in season 87/88. The history of Śląsk also consists, of course, of meetings on the international stage. This includes matches in the UEFA Cup, the Cup Winners’ Cup, the European Cup, the Europa League (qualification), the Champions League (qualification) and the Europa Conference League (qualification). These include matches against Belgium’s Royalt Antwerp (3:2 for Slask), England’s Liverpool (1-5 for Liverpool), Italy’s Napoli (0:2 for Napoli), Spain’s Real Sociedad (0:2 for Sociedad). A total of 56 matches, 20 won and 36 lost.
Slask are currently led by coach Ivan Djurdjevic, who has been trying to put Slask Wroclaw back together since the start of this season. The brightest stars in the squad are unquestionably John Yeboah and Erik Exposito. Szymon Markulis
