The Warciarze played their debut match already on 18 August 1912, against Hertha Poznan, and the match ended with Warta’s high victory as high as 9:2. In 1927 the first football league consisting of 14 teams was established (it was a counterpart of today’s Ekstraklasa). In earlier years, specifically from 1921, the national champion was determined in a different way. In the first league season, Warta took 3rd place just behind Wisła Kraków and 1 FC Katowice. 2 years later, 17 years after the club was founded, the Warta players celebrated their first Polish Championship. 18 years later, specifically in 1947, they managed to win the second and so far last Championship in the club’s history. After these successes, the team from Wielkopolska fell into mediocrity for many years to come.
After relegation in 1950, it was not until the 1993/94 season that they returned to the Premier League (today’s Ekstraklasa). It was not a long stay either, as the Greens returned for just two seasons, after which they were relegated again for a couple of good years. A return to the Ekstraklasa was won in 2020, and the team has not been relegated again since then and is currently playing its third consecutive season at Poland’s highest competition level.
Warta Poznań is currently led by a former member of our team’s staff, specifically Dawid Szulczek. The team plays its matches at a stadium in Grodzisk Wielkopolski capable of holding around 5,000 fans. Apart from the coach with a past in Mielec, the colours of the Greens are currently defended by our former stopper, Kamil Kościelny.
This season, Warta are relying on pragmatic but very effective football, which has taken them to 7th place in the Ekstraklasa table. The team from Poznan has a few standout players in their ranks like Adam Zrelak, Kajetan Szmyt and Dimitrios Stavropoulos, who we will certainly have to watch out for in our match.
