The meeting brought a lot of excitement to the Mielec fans, even though before the first whistle the Stalowcy were one point behind their rivals. Although three weeks had passed since the last 1-0 win against ŁKS in Mielec (26.08.1989), not much had changed in the play of the Mielec team since then. However, it was our team that achieved a sizeable advantage in midfield, time and again getting at Karwat’s goal, who was well disposed on the day. His vis-à-vis Piotrek Wojdyga also showed good interventions on several occasions. In the first half, Jagiellonia created more and better opportunities, including in the 14th minute, after a shot by Gierejkiewicz. A quarter of an hour later, Sajdak failed to reach the ball at close range after a Sliwowski throw-in. In the 34th minute, Kviliūnas, with only our goalkeeper and a defender lying in front of him, hit them both. Prabucki reached the rebound and also lost the duel with the local goalkeeper.
At the start of the second half, the hearts of the blue-and-white fans trembled again, as Prabucki and Ambrogey could have led their team into the lead. However, it was the change made at the break and the appearance of Dariusz Zagórski on the green turf that was a good idea by coach Gąsior. The player’s activity and speed encouraged his partners to better and more aggressive play. Compositional actions started to interlock and loud applause was heard in the stands several times. There were also some impressive rallies by Fedoruk, Tułacz and Sliwowski. Finally came the 62nd minute, which ultimately decided the final result and the Mielec players’ narrow win. It was then that a mistake was made by Kulesza, who lost the ball and it found its way to the feet of Maciej Śliwowski, who placed the ball in the net of the visitors’ goal with a flat shot. There was still a chance to increase the score, but Sajdak’s shot hit the scorer of the only goal in this competition. At the post-match conference, coach Włodzimierz Gąsior stated …that he was completely satisfied with the win, because if there had been a draw…he would also have been satisfied.
